Playing catch-up 👀

Well, it’s October, and I feel like I can finally breathe again after a crazy summer.

We have been busy traveling, for one. We went to Michigan and Seattle at the beginning of September for family trips. Then I went to Nashville for our annual Rodan + Fields Convention. And while I was there, Bryan found out he won tickets to SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE through their lottery, and the tickets were for MY BIRTHDAY, so you bet your ass that we flew to New York to see that! (Whole separate post coming about that because it was just...incredible.) Then last weekend was Connor’s SECOND BIRTHDAY (hey, make sure to read the update on the first three months of his life, since that’s as far as I got in the past 24 months 😂.) And now we’re HERE! Beginning, almost mid-freaking October somehow.

Also in September, I started a new job. I began my job hunt at the end of July, and wouldn’t you know, at the beginning of August, I was let go from my job. I worked at my last agency for almost 4 years. I sensed something was going on and definitely felt like layoffs were probably on the horizon (hence part of the reason I had started looking around). While I thought I could potentially be affected by such an event due to the team I was on and the position I held, there is always that part of you that thinks, "No way. I'm way too valuable..."

Needless to say, when it happened, I was shocked that it was actually happening, but also not really. And no matter how "prepared" you are for a layoff, I don't think anyone can actually be prepared. This is the second time in my career that my job has been affected by a layoff/restructure, and the 4th time I've experienced on at my organization. Each time has been harder than that last.

Aside from the ego blow, the hardest part for me is leaving my co-workers. At every job, I’ve been so fortunate to work with such awesome people, and I’ve collected small groups of best friends at each company. Blue Chip was no different, and actually, many of co-workers from previous jobs all came to work at Blue Chip, so I got the awesome chance to work with them again! The people were what kept me there for so long, and I hated saying goodbye.

In any case - I have a new job at a new agency, that is focused not only on digital products, but also on CONTENT, which as you know, is what I do and love. So far, I’m really enjoying it, although it sucks to be the new girl and I’m ready to make some friends.

And you know, there are worse times to be laid off than summer! I was able to have about 6 weeks off, which, when you think about how long it takes to find work, is actually a pretty quick turnaround!

In the first few weeks, I was heads down applying for jobs. Everyone kept telling me to "enjoy" my time off, and I tried, but at the beginning, I was just super anxious about money and what would happen after my severance ran out. I felt guilty if I didn't spend all day most days applying for work or connecting with people. Eventually, I was able to add in some activities and once I started getting some interviews, it was much easier to relax. I made a "bucket list" and was able to do almost everything on it! I went on a field trip with Liam and we had a "date day" where I picked him up from school early and we went bowling and saw a movie. I went to movies by myself. Bryan and I went to a Cubs game. I got a lot of house projects done. I had lunch and happy hours with friends I hadn't seen in awhile. I went to Target. ALONE. I saw all my doctors (dentists, eye, derm, etc). So it was actually a great period to refresh and recharge, and honestly, I could have done about 4 more weeks, lol. The ONE thing on my bucket list I didn't do is migrate this blog to a different platform, but my goal for that is by the end of the year. It just involves deleting a bunch of old content that's stupid.

Anyhoo—just wanted to catch up quickly. I owe a post about Saturday Night Life and have a couple of other things heavy on my heart to talk through at some point, too.

Before I go, I also wanted to say that I so appreciate all of the love and support I got from ya'll on my last blog post. I can't tell you how humbling and heartwarming it is to hear you all tell me that you love my writing, even if what I'm saying is not that important. So thank you.

lately.

Hello, friends. It's been awhile.

As I indicated, the month of April was rough. The theme was ADJUSTING. Liam was going through sleep regression like a boss and it was my first full month back at work. The whole month, in my opinion, was spent adjusting, re-adjusting and then adjusting some more.

As such, I didn't have much time or energy to sit and write.

But, it's a new month, and hopefully, a new season of parenting. I feel like we are finally close to turning a corner on the sleep thing, which means that we'll probably get used to about 2 weeks of a more regular sleeping pattern and then something else will pop up to derail our best laid sleep plans. Until then, I'm going to enjoy the moment. The past week or so, we've been able to limit nightly wakings to 1-2..and a couple of nights, none at all! I feel so proud of Bryan and I for coming through this horrible phase in one piece. I'll explain why a separate post devoted entirely to sleep.

I haven't been able to do any "Weekend Updates" recently, either, so thought I'd dedicate a post to some photos and small summaries of what we've been up to. The short story is: Not much!

Now that we really only get a couple of hours each day with Liam, we really cherish our weekend time, and quite honestly, have been totally fine with not doing anything. Especially due to the whole no sleep thing. We have been able to spend lots of time together as a family, but have also been able to get in a date night or two, as well as some time independently, and we were also able to spend Easter weekend at home with our families.
April 3-5

We traveled home to Iowa for the weekend and spent the weekend visiting with ALL of Liam's grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. As you can imagine, Liam is a hot commodity when we go home and everyone is dying to spend time with him. We feel so lucky to have all of our family in one place, but it does make us feel like we don't get to spend quality time with everyone. In any case, complain about having too many people to see :)

Spending time with Grandpa, Great Aunt Helen, Aunt Nana, Gigi, and cousin Sloan.

Liam's Easter basket did have some classic candy (for me and Dad, of course!) but we filled it with things we knew we would need soon, in addition to things we already had. It had bowls/spoons, rice cereal, some pouches and Baby food. A book, onesie and lovey...some other random things. He loved it!

April 10-12
I have great friends and they were hellbent on throwing me a "Post Baby Bar Crawl." They made shirts that said, "Baby is here, More room for beer." and on the back "#BackOnTheBottle. (We are all in the business of content creation. Clever, right?!) The day was gorgeous and we had a blast. My hubby was kind enough to be on Liam duty all day and night! I missed my little though!

April 17-19
A typical weekend in the Farrell house these days! We just spent time snuggling and playing with Liam, and got out one night for dinner and drinks. Nothing better than a baby in a bar, right?!

April 24-26

The weather was *trying* to get nice, so we got outside for a bit, although it was still pretty chilly. Liam also got his professional 3/4 month photos taken and they are SO CUTE. Stay tuned...

May 1-3

Last weekend, it was FINALLY nice! Eight degrees nice. We put Liam in his Derby best, and got together with friends at a neighborhood beer garden and got some Vitamin D.
It was also so hot in our house, we jumped around naked (well, one of us did) and spent time on the porch.

So there you have it...life lately.

Currently I'm...

Happy Monday, friends! Instead of boring you with a weekend update, I thought I'd switch things up today. I did have a great weekend though. Very low-key and productive with SO much work done in the nursery. I can't wait to show you pictures when it's finished!

So here's what's happening with me this Monday afternoon.

Currently I'm...

Wearing: A super cozy black, hooded poncho sweater I got in my most recent Stitch Fix. I fear it makes me look a little like a house, but let's be honest, these days I am not the smallest. Comfort is key.

Reading: Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult. Jodi is one of my favorite authors. This book is about a 13-year old searching for her mother, an elephant researcher, who disappeared 10 years earlier.

Loving: The cool weather and first snow of the season!

Not loving: My hands are in so much pain these days. It hurts to make a fist or stretch my fingers. No relief in sight, either.

Watching: All the usual suspects (trashy reality television, Scandal, Good Wife, Grey's, Parenthood, Homeland). Some new shows I've tried that I enjoy: How to Get Away With Murder, Stalker and Marry Me.

Looking forward to: SO many things. We get our glider this week, and then our nursery will be pretty much complete. Thanksgiving is next week, and I'm all about Thanksgiving. We're putting up Christmas decorations this weekend. One of my posts will be featured on Scary Mommy this week. And we are 32 days out from our due date...I am so excited to meet my boy.

Drinking: Water. So much water, all the damn time.

Daydreaming about: Meeting my babe. Going on a vacation. Having hands that don't hurt.

Feeling: My baby roll and tumble inside my belly. He does not have much room, I can tell you that much, but with how active he is, you'd think there was a lot of space in there!

Craving: A Peppermint Mocha. Those are MY JAM during the cold months.

Thinking about: What am I not thinking about is the better question? My mind is constantly in motion these days, thinking about what we have to do for baby, etc. I'm thinking right now about the errands I have to do after work (get spray paint for a nursery DIY project and stop at Trader Joe's), the fact that I don't want to go to the gym after my errands, where I'm going to hang remaining nursery prints after I get home from the gym, and of course - what's for dinner?

Nothin' Much.

Ah, Wednesday. I think it might be my favorite day of the week (After Thursday, Friday and Saturday).

Hope everyone is having a spectacular week so far. Can't complain here - work has been manageable, weather has continued to suck (status quo=no complaints), and it's finally March. So while my previous sentence remains true, the fact that it's March means a few things:

1. Warm weather is in our somewhat near future here in Chicago

2. I'm going to Orlando in 2 weeks

3. I'm going to Las Vegas in 2.5 weeks

4. I'm going to Los Angeles (hopefully) in 4 weeks

5. St. Patrick's Day is coming up and I love me some St. Patty's.

So, that's it for today. Basically I just wanted to brag about my upcoming trips. #sorrynotsorry

BYE!
